Exclamatives and heightened emotion: Extracting pragmatic generalizations from large corpora
نویسندگان
چکیده
Exclamatives like What a dump!, Wow!, and Boy, you’ve grown! are, when uttered in context, rich in information about the speaker’s attitudes. Drawing on evidence from about 100, 000 online product reviews with associated meta-data, we develop a frequency-based characterization of this pragmatic contribution. This allows us to make precise predictions about the exclamativity that inheres in these constructions. In addition, we build logistic regression models and use the resulting statistics to state general, corpusand language-independent hypotheses about what it means to be an exclamative pragmatically. These hypotheses allow us to identify previously unnoticed exclamatives, and they highlight the importance of purely expressive meanings.

Affective Demonstratives and the Division of Pragmatic Labor
Building on [1] and [2], [3] argues for a ‘division of pragmatic labor’: as a result of general pragmatic interactions, unmarked expressions are generally used to convey unmarked messages and marked expressions are generally used to convey marked messages (see also [4, 5]). [6] explicitly splits this into two separate pressures (“What is expressed simply is stereotypically identified” and “What...
متن کاملInferring Meaning: Text, Technology and Questions of Induction
Corpus linguists, including lexicographers, use methods which are often called 'inductive'. That is, they study large corpora or large data sets (such as wordfrequency lists) derived from these corpora, in order to identify patterns in the data. There is detailed discussion of a few statistical techniques (e.g. for identifying significant collocations), but little general discussion of the comb...
متن کاملAnalysis of prosodic features towards modelling of emotional and pragmatic attributes of speech
Although speech technologies keep improving their performance, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms used in speech to transmit, a part from lexical, other information such as emotion, attitude or speaker styles. In this work we have focused on the study of the correlation of basic prosodic features with emotional and pragmatic characteristics. For that purpose, three corpora have been u...

Data used for training statistical machine translation method are usually prepared from three resources: parallel, non-parallel and comparable text corpora. Parallel corpora are an ideal resource for translation but due to lack of these kinds of texts, non-parallel and comparable corpora are used either for parallel text extraction. Most of existing methods for exploiting comparable corpora loo...
